David is the step-brother of Kelly Taylor—becoming so after his father married her mother—and is also the youngest of the group of friends. During high school David is one year behind the rest of the group as he is one year younger; he later catches up to them academically by taking a double course load that allows him to graduate with the class of 1993. He then enrolls at California University with the rest of the core group.
David starts out his freshman year in high school with one friend, Scott Scanlon. He tried to become friends with the core group of the show, who are juniors. David became part of the in crowd while Scott remained a geek, until his accidental shooting death in the middle of his and David's sophomore year. David and Donna's friendship turned into romance. David had problems throughout the series with drugs and alcohol, and in Season 5 it was revealed he inherited some self-destructive tendencies from his mother, who was manic depressive.
David was involved with many women during the series but he only ended up with the one woman he trully loved, Donna Martin.
After graduating from CU, David began running the Peach Pit After Dark, but his terrible business skills led the club into financial ruin, and his plan to make his name in the recording industry (something he had had great highs and lows with in previous seasons) ended when he refused to back a band whose members turned out to be neo-Nazis. He went from working odd jobs to being a music critic to getting another big break in the music biz to writing commercial jingles to the job that carried him to the end of the season as an FM radio disc jockey. When he was not dating Donna, he was involved with regular characters Clare Arnold (Season 5), Valerie Malone (most of Season 6 and 8), and Gina Kincaid (some of Season 10) and also dated numerous other guest characters. But Donna was his true love, and he was hers, and they finally got married in the series finale.
